چکیده

This paper presents geometric algorithms for developing a re-configurable tooling system for fabrication of freeform objects. The proposed method involves a mold block, with n faces, in which the mold cavity is formed by moving a set of discrete pins on each face of the block. The part surfaces are approximated in the mold cavity using the pins from the suitable mold block faces. The geometric algorithms detailed in this paper analyze the part and determine the face of mold block from which the part model is approximated best. Further, the algorithms detect possible interference between pins from different faces, and suitably alter the approximating face to alleviate interferences. By moving these pins in and out of the mold block, the shape of the mold cavity is reconfigured rapidly to suit the changes in part geometry. Since, the proposed method approximates free-form objects with discrete pins, a surface-error calculation method is also developed to control the accuracy. Computer implementation and examples are also presented in this paper. q 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Geometric algorithms for automated design of rotary-platen multi-shot molds

This paper describes algorithms for automated design of rotary-platen type of multi-shot molds for manufacturing multi-material objects. The approach behind our algorithms works in the following manner. First, we classify the given multi-material object into several basic types based on the relationships among different components in the object. For every basic type, we find a molding sequence ...

Approximating Free-form Geometry with Height Fields for Manufacturing

We consider the problem of manufacturing free-form geometry with classical manufacturing techniques, such as mold casting or 3-axis milling. We determine a set of constraints that are necessary for manufacturability and then decompose and, if necessary, deform the shape to satisfy the constraints per segment. We show that many objects can be generated from a small number of (mold-)pieces if sli...

Finding the Shape of a Flexible Blade for Free-form Layered Manufacturing of Plastic Foam Objects

The need for rapid, cost-effective and finish-less manufacturing of large sized, sculptured, physical models from various soft materials is increasing in several fields. For objects fabricated from plastic foams an advantageous approach is freeform, thick-layered manufacturing. Although it is technologically demanding, to achieve the best results (a) computer definition of the geometry has to b...

Process Planning for Reconfigurable Manufacturing System for Mould/Die Making

For efficient manufacture of moulds and dies and in order to meet the unstable market situation, a well organised reconfigurable manufacturing system is required. The geometric features of moulds and dies are not the same as discrete parts. They are contained elements on a block of steel and are usually in the form of contours, slots, corners, slope faces, curved surfaces and cavities. A lot of...
